Also, with a few others, they co-founded 'The Maui Celtic Pipes & Drums', since re-named 'The Isle of Maui Pipe Band'. Hamish: "In honour of Pipe Major John Grant, who left our world on the morning of May 15th. I’m proud to have called him my friend, co-founded a pipe band with him, marched beside him, played music, and laughed, cried, and drank with him….we started the Maui Celtic Radio Show together, and I even tattooed him. I learned a lot from him. We drank whisky, raised a wee bit o’hell, fought like cats & dogs, knocked down walls, built more, including a few between us, like most good Celts! The man is a legend amongst his friends, and enemies too I’m sure. The Black Bear of Maui roars no more…..except in the next place! Sean, mo chara…. you were a lot more than a friend. Aloha ‘Oe John."

HISTORY OF THE MAUI CELTIC RADIO SHOW

THE MAUI CELTIC RADIO SHOW is a Celtic music show that first started on the non-profit and volunteer staffed Mana'o Radio 91.5 fm KEAO-LP Wailuku, Maui, later changed to KMNO on 91.7fm. The show was originally part of 'Sunday Solstice', started by Tony Clifford, and became 2 hours of great Celtic music played by Hamish Burgess of Maui Celtic.
He started his own show, at first with good friend John Grant, guesting with various Mana'o DJs in 2003, initially with 'Sleepy John', and later joined Tony on Sunday Solstice from 8-10am in 2004. Hamish took over the show solo in 2006. As he travels a lot for the show internationally, visiting festivals and interviewing musicians, Joel Agnew or Daniel Vicars would stand in hosting if Hamish was away.

After Mana'o Radio had a change of management in April 2014, the new station emerged as Mana'o Hana Hou Radio, and the show was ironically cancelled in May by program director Tony Clifford, before the station came back on air. Hamish would like to thank the founders of the old Mana'o Radio, Kathy Collins and the late Barry Shannon, for 10 great fun years on local Maui radio.
Within 5 minutes of a public internet post to notify listeners of his absence, Hamish received a message from Stevie Connor, CEO of Blues & Roots Radio in Ontario, Canada: "I want your show!". The Maui Celtic Radio Show first streamed on Blues & Roots Radio on July 13th 2014, and has been with them since, now streaming 3 days a week at www.bluesandrootsradio.com. With great listener figures, and his international connections, Hamish Burgess was made their Head of Operations for the Pacific & West Coast.
During a visit to Scotland in the summer of 2014, Hamish visited Celtic Music Radio 95fm in Glasgow, where he had been a regular guest on various DJs programmes over the years. During a live broadcast from their studios, he was asked to join their roster of hosts by director Ross Macfadyen. The Maui Celtic Radio Show first broadcast across Glasgow August 12th 2014, and is on air and online on Tuesdays at www.celticmusicradio.net.
The Maui Celtic Radio Show with Hamish Burgess returned to the Maui airwaves on Sunday September 20th 2015 at 8-10am - old time slot, but a new station - on the dial at KAKU 88.5 FM Maui (KAKU885FM on facebook). Mahalo to all at Akaku Maui Community Media, especially Shaggy Jenkins and Joel Agnew. www.akaku.org/kaku-fm/.

Hamish travels to many countries interviewing musicians for the program, and often has interview clips with special guests such as the late Liam Clancy, George Millar, Paddy Moloney, Michael Black, Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas, Joanie Madden, Robbie O'Connell and Ed Miller to name but a few.........he often does themed shows, where he talks about the traditions of the Celtic people and the music. These have included themes on the Celtic festivals of Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasadh, the Summer Solstice and the Winter Solstice. Also modern themes of Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, St.Patrick's Day, Valentines Day, Easter, and Canada Day and Independence Day. Other subjects have included Robert Burns, Sea Shanties, Celtic Emigration, and Irish Rebel Songs, and a musical tour of the Celtic Lands. He has even done some Celtic Rock Shows.

Jim or Hamish Douglas Burgess

He is the owner of Maui Celtic, an import and Celtic goods retail company as well as an organization which is a is a cross-cultural link for music events, genealogy, Celtic art and heritage. His website (www.mauiceltic.com) is a resource and archive for all things Scottish and Celtic in Hawaii. He also reports freelance on Scottish events, such as The Gathering, for local Hawaii and mainland newspapers.

He has traveled the world extensively for 27 years, exploring the cultures of everywhere he lived and visited, as a professional scuba-diver at that time, and an avid surfer to this day, bringing him to Oahu for 2 years, then Maui for over almost two decades.

He is also a promoter of traditional Celtic music, producing concerts on Maui with partner Jennifer MacKay Fahrni, ranging from pubs and church halls, to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. These include the world's top Scottish fiddler, Alasdair Fraser, the late Irish singing legend Liam Clancy, Michael Black of the famous Black Family of Ireland, and World Champion Bagpiper Jack Lee, to name but a few. He has organized his own Robert Burns Night on Maui for the last 11 years.

He was honoured to be an instigator of having Douglas Herring’s now famous Hawaii Tartan actually made into kilts being worn here in Hawaii, before it was officially recognized by the State.

Sunday October 30th - Hamish Burgess had a spooky (not really) Samhain/Halloween special on the Maui Celtic Radio Show on Blues & Roots Radio streaming on Blues & Roots Radio at www.bluesandrootsradio.com. Songs & traditions of the ancient Celtic new year Samhain (pronounced Sow-en), the Celtic Feast of the Dead, or the feast to the dying sun, marking the beginning of Winter. In Scotland, Cailleach Bheur, goddess of winter, began her reign. The Celts believed on that night between the passing of the old year, and the arrival of the new, that the veil between our world and the Otherworld (or spirit world) was thinnest, and that spirits and faerie folk could visit the human world, and vice versa, and that you could contact your passed ancestors. That belief has continued with today's Halloween traditions of witches and ghosts, etc. The Christian church called the festival 'The Feast of all Saints', on 'All Saints' Eve' or 'All Hallows' Eve', hence the term "Hallowe'en".

Songs and traditions of the ancient Celtic festival of IMBOLC, which is on the eve of February 1st, marking the beginning of Spring, associated with the goddess Brighid, Brigit, or Bride, divinity of healing and childbirth, smithcraft and the hearth. Brighid is an important link between the Old Ways and the Celtic Christian church, and the hearth tradition continued in the form of St. Brigit of Kildare, who founded a monastery there, where a sacred flame, tended by nuns, burnt continuously from the 5th century until the Reformation, hundreds of years later. In Ireland, her tradition continues at Imbolc time to this day, with woven wicker-work crosses, "Brigit's Crosses", being hung by doorways.
